Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric forklifts is supplied by big industrial batteries that have to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety measures must be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located close to the charging place. The route to the station should not be blocked and an injured employee should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a charging area and battery, open flames are not allowed. Do not permit items like for instance matches or lighters to be used while someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging method could release gas. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
