Responsibilities of a Forklift Driver
The job of a forklift driver is to be able to move materials from one place to another, normally within warehouses and factories. Forklift operators require specialized training, which is commonly offered by the workplace. Prospective operators should be able to pass both a drug test and a background check.
Performing Inspections
A forklift operator's responsibilities include carrying out daily safety and functionality checks. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration mandates that all forklifts be inspected before using them. The operator should inspect the forklift again after the shift. Annual safety training is an important part of the job description of a forklift driver.
Loading and Unloading
To be able to unload and load supplies and to stack stuff in an efficient and timely manner, forklift drivers use the forklift controls.
Weighing Materials
A forklift driver's responsibilities consist of weighing the supplies they are transporting, and logging the weights.
Quality Control
Quality control is one more important part of the forklift driver's responsibility. This involves making certain that orders are correct and making sure the materials do not sustain damage during the moving process.
Battery Care and Maintenance
To be able to make sure that the unit has a long life span, correct forklift battery maintenance is essential. Care and maintenance procedures consist of inspecting the level of water in the forklift battery around every five charge cycles, filling the cell to just over the visible protector, being careful not to overflow the water, and cleaning up any spills. Once a battery is charging, never disrupt the cycle.
PPE: Personal Protective Equipment
When performing works on the forklift battery, like inspecting the level of water, Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is required. Both eye protection and hand protection must be worn, and a fire extinguisher and acid spill kit should be on hand. Forklift operators should observe safety regulations at all times. The charging place should be kept clear of open flame and ventilated.
