There are two standard types of lift trucks, models that run on gas and units that run on electricity:

Internal Combustion or IC Forklifts: The IC Lift Trucks run on gas, liquid propane, CNG or compressed natural gas or diesel. The gas powered models are meant to be utilized outside because they produce gases and pollutants which can be harmful if inhaled. Gas models are also great to be utilized in bad climate and in the rain. These units could carry weights about 15,000 to 35,000 pounds. Due to the maintenance and fuel costs, the gas powered models are more expensive to use compared to models that run on electricity, although, they cost less up front compared to electric powered units. Models which run on liquid propane are the right choice to be used indoors.

Electric Forklifts: Electric forklifts take batteries which need frequent charging. Since these units do not burn any fuel, there are no emissions polluting the air with these equipments. They are the best option for indoor applications and warehouses. Moreover, lift trucks that run on electricity do not require any fuel storage units and they are much quieter to run than other models. Among the disadvantages of electric powered units is that they can not lift loads over 15,000 pounds and therefore, have a slower acceleration than gasoline powered models.

The lift truck is specifically made to move objects and materials easily and quickly. Accidents do happen on a regular basis as is the case with most types of machinery. There are some safety rules which should be followed so as to keep everybody safe. The most essential concern is recruiting a qualified operator, who would be able to show you a valid forklift license.

On the market today, there are numerous different types of lift trucks available. Choosing which one is right for your particular needs would be based on the kinds of loads that you have to transport, what kind of environment your equipment would need to operate in, for example, indoors or outdoors or both. Once you understand your specific needs, it will be easy to match up to the right kind of forklift. When you understand all your requirements precisely you will be able to make the right decision.

One more great way to get first hand experience on the different forklift units is the try renting your lift truck. This would also enable you to see all the possible options available to you. This is a cheaper way to determine if the machine you have chosen can keep up with you on the job site.
