A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machine which is quite like a forklift. It allows the operator to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some objects, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Normally, order pickers are operated by electricity. These kind of machinery are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Usually they are utilized for transporting pallets and completing particular tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator utilizes controls to control the unit from a platform setting which normally sits quite close to the ground. The operator is able to direct the equipment to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades could be lifted up to the required level which makes it really convenient for the operator. For instance, if the required materials, are situated on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then whole platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
When the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker could be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, some companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker is also able to put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be used to complete these specific tasks at some companies instead.
